Yonks ago I read a review and posted on a forum this info:
Saw a review on teletext and thought - nah... can't be reet that!
But it is apparently!
Good grief!
Formerly titled "Danny the Dog," "Unleashed" stars Jet Li as Danny, a man who has been brainwashed by Bob Hoskins' character into believing he's a vicious attack dog whenever the collar around his neck is removed. Morgan Freeman plays a blind man who gives Danny back his humanity.
The bit on teletext says that Hoskins uses him to attack folk who owe money.
Bob gets killed (serves him right, the bad lad) and then Jet Li ends up living with a blind piano tuner - how the HELL did they persuade Mr. Freeman to accept that role?
Not a film I'll be watching, and if I hadn't read it... I would believe that it was a hoax!
Good grief! The mind boggles!
Now I've a pal who buys OWT... but is also a Jet Li fan.
And as it sounded bizarre, and I was in a mood for watching any auld shite... I borrowed it.
And surprisingly...
Well, read this:
My mate did indeed get this and lent it to me... as I said, I'd read the storyline and thought:
"That sounds just bonkers... I bet it's awful!"
On and beneath the mean streets of Glasgow, fiery gangster Bart (Hoskins) is merciless with debtors, would-be rivals and anyone else he takes a passing dislike to. Bart maintains his stranglehold through his unwitting enforcer, Danny (Jet Li), who he has 'raised' since boyhood. Danny has been kept as a near-prisoner: trained to attack and if necessary, kill. Danny knows little of life, except the brutal existence that Bart has so cruelly fashioned for him. However, when Danny has a chance encounter with the sightless piano tuner, Sam (Morgan Freeman), he senses true kindness and compassion for the first time and experiences the transforming power of music.
When a sudden gangland coup separates Danny from Bart and the gang, Danny escapes the underworld. Taking refuge with Sam and his stepdaughter, Victoria (Kerry Condon), Danny finds a family of sorts and a future... However, the mob will not give up their prize asset so easily, and Danny must soon call upon his skills once more to protect his family and bury his past.
Believe it or not, I reckon it's a cracking film... okay, there's some mushy and pretty corny dialogue but I don't think it's a bad story at all having seen it!
Where else do you get the following:
Bawb Hawskins firing guns and effing and jeffing...
Excellent Martial Arts including some interesting close 'Wing-Chun' handworking...
A piano recital...
Morgan Freeman saying the 's' word...
Wait until me chum Stey sees this... he'll not believe my comments!
But I'm giving this 4 out of 5... even though I read some dire reviews, I reckon it's a corker!
So good in fact, I saw it 'on the cheap' in Asda for £6.64 so I bought it!
;D
